Guide to Import Passwords into Chrome from CSV File

Google chrome is the most popular web browser in the world. It is the most selected choice among the people because it very easy to use and it provides many useful features. People who use Google chrome must be familiar with its password-saving feature. It is a very good feature that saves a lot of time and effort by automatically putting passwords on those websites for which you have saved your password like Facebook, Gmail, etc. it auto-fills the password in the password tab, you just need to click on the login tab to proceed further. As remarkable as this feature is, it also comes with an additional facility for its users. What is that additional facility? Well, you can now import your CSV password to Google chrome, and for this, we have written this whole guide to provide you step-by-step guidance for it. Read this guide and follow instructions to import passwords from CSV to chrome.

1. Enable the Password Import Flag

Use the hidden option called Chrome experiments panel to run the experimental features that Google Chrome plans to release in future. Follow these steps to access the Experiments panel and enable Password Import Flag.

  1. Launch Chrome and hit enter after typing chrome://flags in the address bar.
  2. Type password import in the search bar and you should see the Password Import Chrome flag.
  3. Click the Default drop-down button on the right to find Enabled from the menu.
  4. You should see a Relaunch button in the bottom right of the page. Click it to restart the browser.
  5. Click the menu icon on the top-right corner and choose Settings.
  6. Click on Passwords underneath the Autofill section and then navigate to Saved Passwords.
  7. Click the three-dot icon* at the right and choose Import.
  8. In the Open window, find and select your password’s CSV file that you want to import and click Open.

*Make sure to save at least one password in Chrome to see the vertical dots icon.

In this way, Chrome will import all passwords in the CSV file and merge them with existing passwords. Make sure that CSV file should exist in a specific format to work.

2. Enable CSV Import through Command Prompt

In some versions of Chrome, you may not see the Password Import flag option. You can still use Command Prompt or Terminal to activate the import process of passwords via CSV.

For Windows

  1. In the start menu, type cmd and click Open.
  2. Copy the following command in the console and hit Enter to execute.

cd “\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application”

  1. Next, copy and paste the following command and press Enter

chrome.exe -enable-features=PasswordImport

  1. This will launch a Chrome window where you need to navigate to Settings.
  2. Then under the Autofill, click on Passwords.
  3. Click the three dots next to Saved Passwords and choose Import.
  4. Browse to the CSV file and click the Open button to import.

For macOS

  1. Open Finder, Click on Go > Utilities.
  2. In the next window, double-click the Terminal.
  3. Once it opens, paste the following command and hit Enter.

/Applications/Google\ Chrome.app/Contents/MacOS/Google\ Chrome -enable-features=PasswordImport

  1. After executing the command, Chrome will launch. Go to the Settings then Passwords.
  2. Click on the menu on the right of Saved Passwords.
  3. From the drop-down, select Import and find the CSV file containing passwords to confirm.

When the import option does not exist under Extras, this is the simplest method to import passwords into Chrome via CSV file. Another common method is using built-in DevTools functionality.

3. Use DevTools to Enable CSV Password Import Option

DevTools allows you to unhide the import option without working in Command Prompt or Terminal.

  1. Open Chrome and type chrome://settings/passwords to navigate to the passwords page.
  2. Under Saved Passwords, click the three-dot icon. Now, right-click on Export Passwords (the only available option).
  3. Select Inspect from the drop-down menu and you should see a new panel on the right of the browser.
  4. On this DevTools panel, find the word “hidden” located just above the default highlighted part of the code.
  5. Double-click “hidden” to select it then press the Delete
  6. Now look back at the Chrome interface and again click the three dots at the far right of Saved Passwords.
  7. You will see an Import Click it to see a new window. Browse the CSV file and click Open to confirm.

Remember that you will have to repeat the process each time you wish to import a CSV file.

4. Create Shortcut to Enable Import Option

  1. Create a Chrome shortcut on the desktop. In the Start search bar, search for Chrome. Right-click on Google Chrome and click on Open file location.
  2. Now a new window will appear. Right-click on the Google Chrome shortcut click send to > Desktop.
  3. Right-click on the Chrome shortcut that you just created. Head to Properties.
  4. In the Shortcut tab, there is a box next to Target. Copy or type –enable-features=PasswordImport at the end of the Target
  5. Launch Chrome and type in chrome://settings/passwords and press Enter.
  6. Head to the Saved Passwords section and click the three-dot icon to see the Import
  7. Select the relevant CSV file containing passwords and click Open to import.

Although, the last method did not work in my case so try it to check if it works for you.
